| A NOTE ON CHOREOGRAPHY THEFT |
A NOTE: It has come to our attention that there is at least one and possibly several dancers, one of them a former student of mine, using choreography that is property of other people and passing it off as their own. My former student should know better as it was discussed in class that this was proprietary to the troupe she was part of at the time and should not be performed without their permission. She, and others, have chosen to ignore that courtesy and, yes, legality and continue to steal choreography and claim it as theirs. This is disgusting and basically, theft. How would you like it if someone came into your work, took your reports or papers or important items, then claimed it for their own, took all credit for it, and benefited from it? Choreography is copyright the dancers who originate and perform it. Unless it is stated otherwise, you cannot perform it as your own. At least credit the dancer or troupe who originated it and, if you want to be absolutely legal, ask them first. Most of us will say "sure, just give credit where it's due!". |
